Suddenly unemployed: 5 tips for the first time

Once the first shock is digested, it says: Keep calm. This is precisely the prerequisite for a reorientation and the first steps from the crisis.

What you should do now:

Sign up for unemployed
By contacting you unemployed, you benefit several times. First of all, you get financial support from the state in the form of unemployment benefit I (ALG 1) or unemployment benefit II (ALG 2, colloquially: Hartz 4). Your health insurance will also be covered. The employment agency supports you in finding a new job or you will even be paid for further training or retraining.
Assure your testimony
Have you received a qualified job certificate? If not, ask your last employer afterwards – you are entitled to a legal basis. Your next employer would like to know who he is dealing with. Even if you want to reorient yourself professionally, you should not refrain from a certificate.
Keep a positive step
Of course, it is not a nice situation to go into unemployment, but it is not a hopeless one either. Make it clear that many people have already done so and that you can influence your situation yourself.
Structure your everyday life
It is particularly important to find a new structure in the changed everyday life without work. A daily routine with fixed daylight and small rituals keeps you motivated. And you have the energy to actively tackle the “restart” project.
Ask yourself
What can I do? What do I enjoy? Do I want to stay in my old job or start again? Through such and similar questions to yourself, you will find out what your strengths and interests lie in. And perhaps also what you would like to occupy yourself in the future.

What do I need to consider when reporting work?

Here are the three most important points so that you do not lose time in terms of unemployment benefit and job search:

Complying with deadlines
As described in the article above, you should immediately contact the employment agency as job-seek or unemployed – so as soon as you have heard about the termination or if your fixed-term contract expires in less than three months. Even if the cancellation caught you cold, you should be interested in working-in within three days. The unemployment report is due at the latest on the first day without employment.
Provide documents
You will need the following documents now or soon. It makes sense to keep them ready right now
Identity card or passport with registration confirmation
Residence permit and work permit
Social security card
Termination letter and last employment contract
Evidence of previous benefit payments such as housing benefit, unemployment benefit I and II, maintenance benefit
Certificate of receipt of sickness benefit
Updated CV
Keeping Contact the Employment Agency
You should be available to the employment agency at any time. The agency will contact you via the post office. If you plan a move during this time, you should inform the agency in good time so that the letters at the new address can be reached. Otherwise, you will be about to block your unemployment benefit.

What do I have to consider when I have been cancelled myself?

If you have terminated your job yourself, the employment agency will impose a ban on unemployment benefits of 3 months. The lock begins from the first day of the unemployed notification. To bridge these 3 months, you should have a few savings.

However, there are also reasons for this to lead to the cancellation of the blocking period, for example in the event of self-abandonment due to bullying, sexual harassment or unreliable or absent salary payment. Private reasons also play a role here. This usually eliminates the blocking period when you give up your job to contract your partner in another city.

Please note, however, the usual reporting deadlines apply in case of self-disclosure. More in our article above.
When will I be entitled to unemployment benefit?

There are different conditions for receiving unemployment benefits I (ALG 1) and unemployment benefit II (ALG 2).

Claim to ALG 1 exists if you

in the 30 months before the unemployment report, there was at least 12 months insurance.
in the 30 months in mostly fixed-term positions, total minimum 6 months were employed in at least 6 months.

Claim to ALG 2, if you

are unemployed and are not entitled to unemployment benefit.
No unemployment benefit will soon become, but still needs help.
work, but you cannot cover the cost of living with your salary.

Do I have to report unemployed even if I do not want to receive services?

Not everyone who registers unemployed is also entitled to unemployment benefit. If there is no entitlement to unemployment benefit I (ALG 1), the unemployment benefit II (ALG 2) is usually paid – but not in every case. For example, if your partner deserves enough or savings are available, there is no right to ALG 2.

So many people decide without further ado not to come forward unemployed, since there are no cash benefits in sight. Here are four good reasons to do it anyway:

You will receive support from the employment agency when looking for a job. This is worth it of gold, because the search for a new spot may cost you a lot of work and time. So you can use any help.
With the end of the employment relationship, your employer will notify you at the health insurance company and the insurance cover will suspend. If you are registered unemployed, you will continue to be covered by health insurance.
Only when you are registered unemployed does the time of unemployment also count for your later pension. This will not increase your pension, but a complete insurance process is always beneficial. For example, if you want to retire earlier, you have to come to a minimum insurance time – the unemployment report will help you with it.
Particularly important is the unemployment report for the entitlement to a earnings loss pension. Unless there is a report and the mandatory contributions were not paid due to unemployment, the claim could be forfeited.

How long can I receive unemployment benefit?

The reference period depends on how long you have been employed insurance and how old you are. Here is an overview:

If your requirement is used up for ALG 1, the employment agency checks whether you are setting the conditions for receiving ALG 2.
How high is unemployment benefit?

Childless people receive 60 percent of the net salary to date when receiving unemployment benefit. If you have children, you will even get 67 percent of the last net income. The unemployment benefit calculator of the Federal Employment Agency offers you a good orientation.

If you have received a severance payment, it will not be counted towards unemployment benefits. However, if the employment relationship ends earlier than the termination agreement would have ended earlier than the employer would have ended with termination, there may be a suspension time, so that you receive fewer unemployment benefits altogether.
Do I also have as a self-employed person: are you entitled to unemployment benefits?

Self-employed persons, small business owners, and freelancers can also receive unemployment benefits under certain conditions.

Self-employed persons must have been insured for at least 12 months and 30 months before the occurrence of unemployment. It is therefore advisable to take out voluntary unemployment insurance with the onset of self-employment.

To receive unemployment benefits, you have to report unemployed and not work more than 15 hours a week.

If you are fulfilling as a self-employed person: no prerequisites for receiving unemployment benefit I (ALG 1) if you still have the opportunity to receive unemployment benefit II (ALG 2). The most important requirement is that the revenue from your independence is no longer enough to provide for yourself or your family.
What can I do if unemployment benefit is not enough?

If unemployment benefits I (ALG 1) is not sufficient, for example, to cover the rent or other costs, you can also apply for housing benefits, children’s, or unemployment benefit II (ALG 2). You can apply for the job center responsible for you.
Can I have a side job if I withdraw unemployment benefits?

You receive unemployment benefit, but still want to earn something? No problem. You have an allowance of 165 euros per month. If you owe more, however, the part of your earnings that is above the allowance will be credited to your unemployment benefit. This means that your unemployment benefit will be cut in this case.
Will savings, rental income or interest be counted against my unemployment benefit?

Income such as rental income and interest will not be counted towards unemployment benefit I (ALG 1). It is the same with savings or real estate. The income or assets of your partner does not matter here.

However, unemployment benefit II (ALG 2) only receives people in need of assistance. So you can only obtain it if there are no income or savings to make your living and that of your family.
Do I also receive unemployment benefits during continuing vocational training?

With further training, you can make use of the time of unemployment in a meaningful way. If you are entitled to unemployment benefit, you will also be paid for it in the already approved amount during your further training. If further training is necessary and the education provider and your further training are certified, the chances are good that the employment agency will cover the costs. You can find out more about this on our guide page for the education voucher.

If you are still unemployed after further training, you can apply for unemployment benefits for at least 30 days – even if your entitlement to unemployment benefits expires during the training and therefore actually no longer exists. So you benefit from further training several times or retraining.
